The Tree in my backyard:
I'm not exactly sure how it happened, but a few years ago a tree started growing in our front yard about three feet from our porch. I don't know what kind of tree it is, but I can tell you about our porch :) It's a really nice porch (yes I live in the south now) made of concrete and brick and it's raised to about eight feet above the ground. It's facing the west, so it's perfect to watch the sunset. I go out there frequently to clear my mind, be still, pray, listen to the birds, get outside myself... you get the point. So this morning I was sitting there with a lot on my mind and heart. I was reciting 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 "For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." I felt inspired to ask myself this question: "What do you see?" Hmmm... I looked around and the first thing I noticed was that tree, standing right in front of me. At this point it is has grown so that it's tallest branch reaches the top of the gutter. I noticed how there weren't any leaves on it yet. I thought about how when the leaves blossom and the tree becomes full it's going to block my wonderful view from the front porch. I started thinking about how my roommate wanted to move it years ago when it was small but never got around to it. Now it's roots are deep. It's going to be very difficult to move. And not only will it block our view, eventually it may start growing in towards the house and that will be a nightmare to have to take care of.In that moment I saw what this tree represents in my own life. There are things that I have let grow in my mind and heart over the years. Negative thoughts, habitual sins, recurring emotions that I haven't fought through or dealt with properly, lies that I haven't uprooted... These things have developed perspectives and thinking patterns in my mind that have deep roots, and they're clouding my vision. The longer I go without dealing with them; without removing them from the deep places of my heart, the more overpowering they become, to the point where one day I won't be able to enjoy the scenery. I won't see life for what it really is because I've let the lies of Satan and our culture shape how I think and see.The good thing is as of late I've been learning how to fight for what's already mine. It's NEVER TOO LATE to uproot. The bigger the obstacles grow the more tempting it is to avoid taking care of them. We try to avoid the pain of uprooting but fail to realize that the pain that comes from letting these things grow hurts way worse than the pain of yanking them out. In the same way that seeds of lies can turn into trees of confusion, seeds of truth can grow into pillars we can lean on. The psalmist wrote in Psalm 1 about the man who meditates on God's Word day and night: "He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers." I don't know about you but I would like to prosper :)By the way, I'm sitting on my front porch as I type this. And this gigantic robin just came out of nowhere flapping it's wings like two feet in front of me. Scared the living daylights out of me!!And maybe I'll talk my roommate into moving that tree this summer :)
